Traceroute

This is a classic one. Yet surprisingly a lot of people fail to describe the functionality with acceptable level of detail.

What I really want to hear as part of the correct answer is how the IP addresses of the intermediate routers are obtained.

For the advance users: why traceroute with -I sometimes reveals more information and displays IP for those devices that normally would come back with just ‘* * *’?
