I got it working in Ubuntu by installing: libssh2-1-dev libssh2-php php-pear (for pecl) The pecl ssh2 is still not stable, but the error gives the most current channel to use. I installed wordpress / the LAMP server as root, as the user httpd runs as is apache and apache. Did you make the user www-data and if so what permissions did you assign to that user/group?
